Drama and Gilbert & Sullivan
About us
The Grenoside and Birley Carr Players have a theatrical heritage stretching back around 70 years, and they show no signs of taking a final bow! The group was formed in 2010 through a merger of the Grenoside Drama Group and Birley Carr Players, two companies with similarly long and proud histories of bringing quality theatre to the local community.
Today, the combined group puts on two productions a year (a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta in March and a full play in October) offering audiences a wonderful mix of musical theatre and drama right on the doorstep.
Recent productions
The group’s most recent operetta was the much-loved Gilbert and Sullivan classic, The Pirates of Penzance. Their latest play was the gripping thriller, Who Lies There. Details of forthcoming productions will be announced following the May AGM, so watch this space!
A remarkable archive Did you know the two original groups and their combined successor have put on over 300 productions since 1948? The group’s archive at gbcplayers.uk is a treasure trove of theatre history, with programmes, synopses, personal recollections, anecdotes and more than 2,500 photos. Well worth a browse!
