About us

The Wednesday Wayfarers are Grenoside’s very own walking group, based at the Community Centre and open to anyone who loves getting out into the fresh air. With around 70 members and a wonderfully relaxed approach, it’s a fantastic way to explore the beautiful countryside on our doorstep, keep active and enjoy great company.

here’s no obligation to attend every week, no membership fee and no need to book in advance. Simply turn up on a Wednesday morning and join whichever walk takes your fancy!

Our weekly walks The group meets every Wednesday morning at 9:15am, ready to set off at 9:30am prompt from the Community Centre Carpark. The route and distance are decided on the day, taking into account the weather and how many members are in attendance. Each week at least two walks are put forward by members, meaning there’s usually something to suit everyone. Groups typically range from 12 to 20 walkers per walk.

Walks cover between 5 and 8 miles, predominantly within around a 30 mile radius of Grenoside. Favourite areas include the Peak District and Holmfirth, and members take it in turns to drive to the walk locations.

Monthly coach trips On the second Wednesday of the month from April to September, and the first Wednesday in October, the group swaps the cars for a coach and heads further afield to more distant walking venues, setting off at 8am. This year the group has already visited Swaledale, the East Coast and the Yorkshire Wolds. The coach trips are priced separately.

Membership There is a small fee paid annually to join the Wednesday Wayfarers. Members simply turn up whenever they are free on a Wednesday. There is no obligation to attend every week, making it a wonderfully flexible way to stay active and socialise.

The group currently has around 70 members and is always looking for new walkers to join the fold.
